Grand Challenges Canada’s “Stars in Global Health Competition” Round 6 is on!gccrisingstars2

The Stars in Global Health Competition is $100K towards worthy global health projects. Part of the application process is a 2-minute video demonstrating in layman terms the project idea. Votes for each project are collected and count in a small measure towards the applications success.

Thiamin-fortified fish sauce as a means of combating infantile beriberi in rural Cambodia

Adding thiamin to fish sauce offers a simple, cost-effective and sustainable solution to infantile beriberi. Consuming fortified fish sauce will raise maternal blood and breast milk thiamin levels, and thus infant thiamin intake, preventing beriberi.

Sterile Drill Covers for Low Cost Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

There is limited supply of surgical drills in LMICs, but commercial power tools are widely available. We have developed a low-cost sterilizable drill cover that allows the safe use of commercial power drills for orthopaedic trauma surgery.

The Post Discharge Survival Project

We propose a two-pronged solution: 1) An mHealth application “DOC” for hospital use to identify at-risk children who need referral to a community health worker and 2) a discharge kit that will help parents care for their recovering child.

Cheap drugs for bad bugs: engineering natural product synthesis

We will engineer bacteria to produce a natural product drug molecule at high levels. By developing a cheap, biologically-based production system, we will be able to reduce the cost of this drug for the developing world.
