Grand Challenges Canada announces Stars in Global Health Phase I Request for Proposals. This unique program enables innovators in developing countries, as well as in Canada, to develop their bold ideas with big impact to improve global health conditions.
Awards are initially valued at $100,000 CAD for up to 12–18 months to demonstrate proof of concept of the idea.
Phase I grantees who complete their proof-of-concept projects and have solutions that are ready to transition to scale will be invited to submit Phase II – Transition to Scale proposals, which will require 50% matching through partnerships.
Deadline: Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Since October 2011, Grand Challenges Canada has awarded over 200 Phase I grants. Previous examples have included:
- A social enterprise that aims to be the leading global provider of life-saving and life-changing solutions for women – with their for-profit approach and “for women by women” philosophy, they identify women’s needs, then design, deliver and scale affordable technologies such as birth kits to meet those needs, increase income and improve health
A low-cost prosthetic knee that has the potential to be mass-produced and distributed to amputees in the developing world- An inexpensive water filter made from the modified protein (keratin) in poultry feathers to remove arsenic from drinking water in India
- A sensor platform that turns any mobile phone into a glucose monitor (pictured to the right), enabling cost-effective diabetes management
- A novel mobile phone tools for female Community Health Workers (CHWs) to case-find, refer and encourage women to attend breast centres in Bangladesh.

Proposals must include a two-minute video explaining the target global health problem, the proposed solution and why it is a creative, bold and innovative approach. The purpose of the video is to engage the public in global health and demonstrate the creativity of innovators. These videos will be posted on Grand Challenges Canada’s website for public viewing and comment.
